Before scientists can understand how gorilla society
works, they must be able to identify individual members
of the group. You identify people by their hair
color, eyes, nose and body build. Well, scientists look
at individual gorillas the same way. A gorilla's nose
is its most unique feature, so scientists identify individual
gorillas by the shape of their nose and nostrils. They
use gorilla noses in the same way that human fingerprints
are used for identification.
On the right are six gorillas who live in the Congo
Gorilla Forest at the Bronx Zoo. Click each gorilla's
picture to learn more, and see if you can find differences
in eyes, hair color and, of course, noses.
